Probability of Success

2007-08: Couturier played for the Notre Dame Hounds Midget AAA squad, where he scored 19 goals and 37 assists for 56 points in 40 games. He also represented Team Atlantic at the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, where he picked up 1 assist in 5 games. Couturier was drafted second overall by the QMJHL's Drummondville Voltigeurs in the 2008 QMJHL Draft.

2008-09: Couturier played his QMJHL rookie season for Drummondville, appearing in 58 games for that club. He scored 9 goals and added 22 assists for 31 points. In 19 playoff games for the Voltigeurs, Couturier scored 1 goal and chipped in 7 assists for 8 points. He once again represented Team Atlantic at the 2009 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where he scored 5 goals and added 4 assists for 9 points in 5 games.

2009-10: In 68 games for the Voltigeurs, Courturier scored 41 goals and added 55 assists for 96 points on the season. Couturier won the Jean Beliveau Trophy as the QMJHL's leading scorer and was a QMJHL Second-Team All-Star.. He played in 14 playoff games for that team, netting 10 goals while adding 8 assists for 18 points.

Talent Analysis

A combination of size and skill, Couturier is a solid and safe contributor at both ends of the ice. Perhaps his on-ice vision is his greatest asset, with a knack for finding an open teammate and threading a pass across the rink. Although he needs to continue to add strength to his frame and he is not known for being a punishing physical player, he uses his body well to protect the puck and make a play. Compared to the rest of the package, his skating is only average with the first few steps needing some extra work.

Couturier will attend Flyers camp with his sights set on securing a roster spot in 2011-12 but with the Flyers' depth at forward, particularly at the center position, he may be headed back to Drummondville for one more season of juniors. Should he return to juniors, Couturier would likely once again play for Canada's entry in the 2012 World Junior U-20 championships. One of the players in consideration for the first overall pick headed into the 2011 NHL Draft, Couturier projects to being a top level two-way forward and a gifted offensive player that makes those around him better. While Flyers fans may have to wait until 2012-13 to see him at the NHL level, he should be a fixture in the Philadelphia lineup once he arrives.

The Philadelphia Flyers took six players, spread out over seven rounds, in the 2011 NHL Draft. The first two picks, earned from trades with Columbus, featured a first rounder and a third rounder. Philadelphia also had two fourth round picks, a sixth round pick and a seventh round pick. The Flyers, however, did not have a second round pick.

The first round pick ended up being forward Sean Couturier, now a staple for the Flyers. And the third round pick was Nick Cousins, a center who has been making his way to the NHL. Read more»

Philadelphia Flyers 2012 draft preview

Two years removed from a 2010 Stanley Cup Finals which saw the Chicago Blackhawks triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers, the products of the Flyers' 2003 Draft class finally stood atop the NHL world; only they stood there for the Los Angeles Kings. Right before the draft last year, Philadelphia was buzzing with rumors, speculation, and enough chaos to send shockwaves through the NHL. The end result, following what in hindsight appears to be a successful weekend at the podium, was a collection of four young forwards that had a tremendous impact on the Flyers' 2011-12 season: Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Sean Couturier, and Brayden Schenn. The two stars that had once defined their organization, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter, were on their way out of town and to an eventual Stanley Cup with Los Angeles.

Though many have graduated from the prospect list through the course of this past season, a number of the 11 rookies that took part in the Philadelphia Flyers' 2011-12 season were also key components to their 2012 postseason.

For rookies in the Flyers' system, the 2011-12 season was unlike any other. The team was in the midst of a turnover and with that turnover came opportunity. The rest of the opportunities were given out due to injuries, but each player was able to step up and make the Flyers' regular season a success.

    Season Review: Sean Couturier

Sean Couturier is living proof that you do not have to be a 50 goal scorer to be one of the most valuable players on your team. On a team that struggled to put up consistent offense for much of the season, having a player who helps shut down your opponent’s top line like Couturier is so important.

14 goals and 34 points is hardly the offensive production you’d like out of a player selected eighth overall back in 2011, but he excels in other areas of the game. Couturier won 55.1% of his faceoffs during the 2016-17 season.

He finished the year with a 54.5 Corsi For percentage, which was the most of any Flyer who played at least 25 games last season. The Flyers had a +14 goal differential when Couturier was on the ice and a -36 goal differential when he wasn’t.

Couturier is quickly becoming one of the best defensive forwards in the league and excelled as both a penalty killer and shot suppressor. However, many fans will consider the 24-year-old center a disappointment because he has yet to score 40 points in a season.

Despite the low overall offensive production, Couturier has performed better at 5 v 5 than some better names in the league over the past two seasons.

    — Alexander Appleyard (@avappleyard) July 22, 2017

Couturier’s biggest problem during that span has been staying healthy. Various injuries have caused him to miss 35 combined games the last two years (19 in 2015-16 and 16 in 2016-17). A healthy Couturier in 2017-18 will go a long way for the team’s success.

What do you think of Couturier’s 2016-17 performance?
